Allowed characters and special characters

The size of your text (or the number of characters in your message) depends on the encoding chosen when sending your SMS:

  • SMS in normal ISO-8859-15 encoding: 160 characters maximum per SMS, then automatic concatenation of your SMS up to 5 SMS

  • Unicode SMS: 70 characters maximum, the cost of 1 SMS sent per recipient every 70 characters and this allows emoticons to be added.

What are the specificities for “special” characters?

The following characters count double when calculating the size of your text: { } € [ ] ~ ^ ¨ |

There are also “substitutable” characters, such as ç, ê, ë or ô, which do not exist in GSM characters.

Unless you act otherwise, these characters will be automatically replaced in your SMS sending.

If you specify a character that is not present in the list, it will be replaced by “?”.
